There is a new episode of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT on tonight at 8:30 p.m. on FOX. Everyone make sure you tune in. There's been a lot said about the death of the situation comedy in recent years. People wrote it off after Friends ended last season. (It seems people only turn on the TV when a couple of bumbling, stumbling, ne'erdowell, prepubescent-like adults named Ross and Rachel end and rekindle their relationship over and over again. I have news for you. That's not comedy, and that's not funny.)
Arrested Development is a new kind of comedy. It's shot like a documentary. The stories are linear. They follow from episode to episode, season to season. Some jokes reward the faithful audience who have watched the show since its inception. The show also does not contain a laugh track, which I absolutely love. The laugh track, to me, can be degrading. Why does a show have to tell us when to laugh? Can we not understand when something is funny?
I hope FOX holds onto this show for a few more years. We have to remember, Cheers was awfully rated its first season. And quite frankly, it wasn't that funny, either. NBC left the show on until an audience found it, though. FOX has the gold standard of comedies on its hands right now outside of The Simpsons. Cancelling the show would be a huge mistake.
Amid the garbage of reality TV, insipid, retread dramas and simply unfunny sitcoms, Arrested Development stands out as the last bastion of TV comedy. I hope it revives the sitcom in much the same way The Cosby Show did 20 years ago.
